2014 Municipal Projects
Rock Cabin Road Clean Up
Schuyler County Soil and Water helped to coordinate a clean up event through the Schuyler County Water Quality Coordinating Committee and Schuyler County Environmental Management Council on Rock Cabin Road as part of an Earth Day event. Over 15 bags of garbage were collected along with other refuse. The Town of Montour Highway Department, who maintains this important corridor next to the Queen Catharine Marsh, generously picked up the bags and disposed of them. |
Beaver Dam Removal Permitting
Over a half a dozen beaver dam removal permits were obtained for municipalities in areas where dams threatened to flood road ways throughout Schuyler County. Several of the dams themselves were removed by Schuyler County Soil and Water Conservation District equipment operator Jim Barrett.

Peach Orchard Road Outlet Stabilization
We were able to work jointly with the Town of Hector highway department to stabilize an outlet area adjacent to Peach Orchard Road and directly next to Seneca Lake itself. A very large piece of concrete had been under cut from erosion causing it to tip and destabilize the outlet area. This posed a significant risk if left unattended. Jim Barrett, with the assistance of the Hector highway department was able to stabilize the area utilizing pre-fab concrete blocks.

Town of Dix—Road Ditch Stabilization Project
We were able to assist the Town of Dix with cost share funds and technical assistance to help stabilize a road ditch on Beaver Dams Moreland Road. This significant stretch is steep and was highly eroded causing a safety and road issue. Utilizing a combination of rip rap and hydro-seeding the area was able to be stabilized.

Clute Park
The Soil and Water Conservation District assisted the Village of Watkins Glen with stabilizing the shore areas of Clute Park where ice damage from the previous winter had caused erosion above the existing rip rap. This project was completed by utilizing the County Highway Loader, and the Village of Watkins Glen backhoe. |
Town of Orange Beaver Dam Failure
A significant amount of damage was caused to Hornby and Coon Hollow Roads in the Town of Orange after a beaver dam failure occurred. The significant damage caused over 1,500 feet of road ditch erosion, and the complete closure of Coon Hollow Roads. The Soil and Water District has been working with the Town, the Department of Environmental Conservation, Assemblyman Palmesano, and Senator O’mara to try to find the funds to help repair the damage that occurred from this incident. The Town of Orange Highway has worked an immense amount of time making these roads passable until further more permanent work can be financed and completed. |
Hydro-seeding
A strong effort, with multiple funding sources, was put forth to have a strong focus on critical area seeding in the County. Nearly $25,000 in hydro-seeding materials was obtained by the Soil and Water District for its municipalities from grant funding. 77 acres of hydro-seeding was completed. 18.19 miles of road ditches, agricultural best management project sites, stream projects, etc… were all seeded throughout the County to help prevent erosion and create stabilization of those disturbed areas.

County Road 9
A waterway was installed on private property on CR 9 in the Town of Hector to help give a preferential flow path for a county crossover pipe down to a stable outlet area. This project was completed with the Chemung County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Yanmar excavator and the use of the Village of Watkins Glen’s 1 ton dump truck.

Geographic Information System (GIS) - Mapping
The Schuyler County Soil and Water Conservation District continued its intensive mapping project to assist the Towns and the County. Last year Rebecca Smith, District Technician, was able to GPS and create a table of information in GIS of all the Towns Culverts. This included pictures, sizes, condition, material made out of, and the date of installation. This effort was such a big hit with the Town Highway departments that they asked to have a database created of all the road signs. So once again Rebecca GPS’d and catalogued nearly 4,000 signs in the Town. She was also able to finish all of the County Highway culverts this year totaling over 600 culverts. There was over a 150 maps made for municipalities, businesses, and individuals this past year alone.
